Carlos Mauricio Valenti Perrillat (born November 15, 1888, in Paris – died October 29, 1912, in Paris) was a talented French-born painter. He spent most of his life creating art in Guatemala. Carlos Valenti was a very gifted artist. Even though he lived in a time with strict rules in Guatemala, he created some of the most important art of the 20th century. Many people see him as a pioneer of modern Guatemalan art.

Early Life and Talent

Carlos Valenti was born in Paris, France, on November 15, 1888. When he was a child, he moved to Guatemala with his mother and two brothers. His father was already living there.

From a young age, Carlos showed great talent. He was a brilliant student and even won a gold medal for being the best. He was also a favorite piano student of Professor Herculano Alvarado. Later, when he studied at the Fine Arts Academy, his amazing drawing skills impressed his teacher, Santiago González.

A Bright Young Artist

Carlos Valenti was part of a special group of artists, poets, and writers. This group included famous names like Carlos Wyld Ospina, Rafael Arévalo Martínez, and Carlos Mérida. They worked closely with Jaime Sabartés, a friend of the famous painter Pablo Picasso.

In this group, Carlos Valenti was like a guiding light. He was a great friend and became a master artist very quickly. By the age of 22, he already had his own unique style. His true genius shone through from the very beginning. His art was very bold and daring for his time. When he drew, his lines were strong and clear.

His Unique Art Style

Carlos Valenti's art showed deep feelings and his own inner thoughts. He used colors in a beautiful way, and his brush strokes were simple yet powerful. This reminds us of the Impressionist art style.

His drawings and colors often explored unusual topics for his time. This made him a very unique artist. Some people even think he was the first Expressionist painter in Guatemala. Expressionism is an art style where artists show their feelings and emotions, rather than just what they see.

Studying in Paris

In 1912, Carlos Valenti traveled to Paris, France, with his friend and fellow painter, Carlos Mérida. They wanted to continue their art studies. Soon after arriving, they visited Pablo Picasso. They had a letter from Jaime Sabartés asking Picasso for advice on where to study.

Carlos and Carlos Mérida then enrolled at the Vitty Academy. There, they learned from famous artists like the Dutch painter Kees van Dongen and the Spanish painter Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa.

A Tragic End

Sadly, Carlos Valenti had diabetes since he was young. In Paris, he started to notice that his eyesight was getting worse because of his illness. A specialist doctor in Paris told him he needed to rest and stop painting completely.

This news made Carlos very sad. All his plans for art were ruined, and he felt like he had lost the most important part of his life: art. Two years before, he had written about how much art meant to him. He believed artists should sacrifice everything for their work and put all their feelings into their paintings.

On October 29, 1912, Carlos Valenti tragically ended his life. He was buried in the Montparnasse cemetery in Paris.

Some of his paintings are now part of the collection at the Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno "Carlos Mérida" in Guatemala City.
