Political Career
Starting in Politics
In 2003, Carlos Mazón became the head of the Department of Commerce and Consumption in the Valencian government. A few years later, he moved into politics in the Province of Alicante. He worked as a local council member in the city of Alicante and in the town of Catral. He also directed the Chamber of Commerce.
In July 2019, Mazón was chosen as the President of the Provincial Deputation of Alicante. This is a local government body. He received support from another party, Citizens. A year later, he became the leader of the PP party in his province.
President of the Valencian Government
In July 2021, Carlos Mazón became the main leader of the People's Party in the Valencian Community.
In the 2023 Valencian regional election, his party won the most seats. They formed a government with the Vox party. The new government had ten ministers, with seven from the PP and three from Vox. One of the Vox ministers was Vicente Barrera, who became the vice president and Minister of Culture and Sport. The government led by Mazón supported groups that believe the Valencian language is different from Catalan. They stopped funding groups that they thought supported Catalanism.
In July 2024, Mazón decided to remove the ministers from the Vox party from his government. He then continued to govern with fewer ministers. This decision came after a disagreement between the two parties across Spain. Mazón and former minister Barrera spoke kindly of each other after the change.
Mazón was the president during the terrible October 2024 Spain floods. These floods caused a lot of damage in the Valencian Community. Some people criticized him because a special unit for disaster response, planned by the previous president, had been removed. The government said this unit was removed to save money and make things work better.
Mazón was also criticized for having a long lunch on the day of the disaster. He left the lunch around 6 PM and arrived at the emergency center about 7:30 PM.
Mazón, along with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and King Felipe VI of Spain, faced angry reactions from local people affected by the floods. Mazón said that a national government body had given and then taken back a flood warning. This body denied his claim. He was also criticized for not asking for enough help from the armed forces. Mazón said it was the military's decision to get involved. However, the head of the Military Emergency Unit said that regional governments need to ask for support.
On November 9, 2024, about 130,000 people protested in Valencia. They asked Mazón to resign because of how the floods were handled.
