Carlos Spano (born in Málaga, Spain, in 1773 – died in Talca, Chile, on March 3, 1814) was a brave Spanish Army officer. He became a hero during the Chilean War of Independence.

Spano started his military journey in 1786 as a soldier in the Spanish Army. He fought in important battles in places like Ceuta, Spanish Morocco, and Aragon against the French. Later, he was sent to Chile with a group of soldiers called the Infantes de Concepción. In 1787, he was promoted to Lieutenant in the Dragones de la Frontera.

Fighting for Freedom

Carlos Spano chose to support the "patriot" side during the Chilean War of Independence. This meant he fought for Chile's freedom from Spanish rule. In 1813, he was promoted to a high rank: Sergeant Major of Grenadiers.

Key Battles

He showed great courage during the Siege of Chillan in August 1813, where he was injured. On November 27, 1813, he became a Colonel. He was also made the General Commander of Grenadiers. This was a very important leadership role.

His Final Battle

The Government Junta, which was the ruling group for the patriots, put Colonel Spano in charge of defending the city of Talca. He bravely led his troops in the First Battle of Talca. Sadly, he died during this battle while fighting for Chile's independence.

His Legacy

To honor his bravery, one of the first ships of the Peruvian navy was named after him. It was a brig (a type of sailing ship) called "Colonel Spano."
