School History
When the School Started
Carlton Gardens Primary School first opened its doors in 1884. It has been teaching students continuously since then. For a short time during the 1918 flu outbreak, it was used as a hospital.
Building the School
The school was built on land bought by the Education Department in 1869. This area was one of the first places developed outside central Melbourne. People at the time said the land was "one of the best" in Carlton.
Other Names for the School
Over the years, the school has been known by different names. Sometimes it was called Rathdowne Street Primary School. Other times, it was known as Carlton Primary School. The main building, which faces Rathdowne Street, is a special heritage building. It was built in 1884 and is still a key part of the school today.
