When Did Carlton Gardens Primary School Open?
Carlton Gardens Primary School first opened its doors in 1884. It has been teaching students continuously since then. For a short time during a worldwide health event in 1918, the school building was used as a hospital.
How the School Land Was Chosen
The school was built in one of the first areas developed outside central Melbourne. The land was bought by the Education Department in 1869 from a landowner named Thomas O'Grady. At the time, people said it was "one of the best" spots in Carlton for a school.
Different Names and Historic Buildings
Throughout its history, the school has also been known by other names, like Rathdowne Street Primary School and Carlton Primary School. Its main building, which faces Rathdowne Street, is a very important heritage building. It was built in 1884 and still stands proudly today.
