Carme Riera Guilera (born 12 January 1948) is a famous Spanish writer. She writes many types of books, including novels and essays. She also creates short stories and scripts for radio and TV shows. Carme Riera is a professor of Spanish literature at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
She was born in Palma, a city in Spain. As a child, she went to school there and met other writers. In 1965, she moved to Barcelona to study Spanish literature at the university. She finished her studies in 1970.
Carme Riera writes in two languages: Catalan and Spanish. Sometimes, she publishes her own translations of her books at the same time. She lives in Barcelona.
Her most well-known book is the historical novel "Dins el darrer blau" (1994). This book won many awards. It was the first novel written in Catalan to win the National Prize for Narrative from the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
Carme Riera was chosen to be a member of the Real Academia Española in 2012. She officially joined this important group on 7 November 2013.

Carme Riera loves to read, and many writers have inspired her. She has read works by famous authors like Sappho, Petrarch, Goethe, and Virginia Woolf. She also enjoys classic Spanish writers such as Miguel de Cervantes and Carmen Laforet.
However, Carme Riera says that her own stories are rooted in the traditional Majorcan tales. She was also greatly influenced by two very important Catalan writers: Caterina Albert and Mercè Rodoreda. These writers helped shape modern Catalan storytelling.

Awards and Honors
Carme Riera has received many important awards for her writing:
- 1980: The Prudenci Bertrana Prize for her novel Una primavera per a Domenico Guarini.
- 1989: The Ramon Llull Novel Award for her book Joc de miralls.
- 1994: The Josep Pla Award for Dins el darrer blau. This novel also won several other prizes, including the Joan Crexells Prize, the Lletra d'Or (Golden Letter) Prize, and the National Prize for Narrative from the Ministry of Culture.
- 2000: The government of Catalonia gave her the Creu de Sant Jordi (Cross of Saint George). This is a very high honor.
- 2015: She received the Premio Nacional de las Letras Españolas, which is a major national award for Spanish literature.
Carme Riera is also a member of the Association of Catalan Language Writers.
