Carmen Martínez-Bordiú (born 26 February 1951) is a Spanish noblewoman and a well-known public figure. She is also known as María del Carmen Martínez-Bordiú y Franco.

From July 2018 to October 2022, Carmen held the title of 2nd Duchess of Franco. This title was given to her mother by her grandfather, Francisco Franco, who was a powerful leader in Spain. However, her title was later removed due to a new law called the Democratic Memory Law. This law aimed to remove symbols connected to Franco's time in power.

Early Life and Family

Carmen Martínez-Bordiú was born on February 26, 1951, in Madrid, Spain. Her birthplace was the Palacio Real de El Pardo, a historic palace. This palace was used by the Spanish royal family in the past. Later, it became the home of General Franco and his family.

Carmen's parents were Cristóbal Martínez-Bordiú, 10th Marquis of Villaverde, and Carmen Franco, 1st Duchess of Franco. Her mother was the only child of Francisco Franco. He was the leader of Spain for many years. Carmen was his first grandchild.

She has six siblings: Mariola, Francis, Merry, Cristóbal, Arantxa, and Jaime.

First Marriage

In 1972, when Carmen was 21, she married Prince Alfonso, Duke of Bourbon. The wedding took place in Madrid. Prince Alfonso was the grandson of King Alfonso XIII of Spain.

Carmen and Alfonso had two sons:

  • François, born in 1972.
  • Louis Alphonse, born in 1974.

After her grandfather, General Franco, passed away in 1975, his family lost their political influence. Carmen and Alfonso separated in 1979. They divorced in 1982. Alfonso was given custody of their sons. Sadly, their elder son, François, died in a car accident in 1984.

Later Marriages and Family Life

After her first marriage ended, Carmen lived with a Frenchman named Jean-Marie Rossi. They married in 1984. They had a daughter together, María Cynthia Rossi, born in 1985.

In 1989, Carmen's first husband, Alfonso, died in a skiing accident. Carmen then had a legal disagreement with Alfonso's mother about who would care for their surviving son, Louis Alphonse. Carmen did not win this legal case.

Carmen and Jean-Marie Rossi separated in 1994 and divorced in 1995.

In 2006, Carmen married for a third time to José Campos García. He is from Spain.

Grandchildren and Public Life

Carmen became a grandmother in 2007 when her granddaughter Eugenia was born. In 2010, she had twin grandsons, Luis and Alfonso. Another grandson, Henri, was born in 2019.

In 2006, Carmen took part in a TV show called "Mira quién baila!" This show is the Spanish version of "Strictly Come Dancing".
