Carneros Creek, also known as Arroyo de Los Carneros, is a stream in California. Its name, "Arroyo de Los Carneros," comes from Spanish and means "Creek of the Rams." This creek starts on the eastern side of the Temblor Range in San Luis Obispo County. It flows generally west, then turns northwest. Finally, it joins Santos Creek in Kern County, California. This meeting point is located northwest of the Bacon Hills.
History of Carneros Creek
Arroyo de Los Carneros was once an important stream. It also served as a watering place along El Camino Viejo. This old road connected different areas in California. The creek was located between Chico Martinez Creek to the south and Aguaje de en Media to the north.
Carneros Spring and Rocks
A special watering spot called Carneros Spring is found near the creek. It is at the base of Carneros Rocks. These rocks are a natural outcrop of a type of stone called Vaqueros sandstone. The spring is located east and south of the creek. It is found before the creek leaves the foothills of the Temblor Range.
Why the Name "Carneros"?
The name "Carneros" might have come from the animals that once lived in the area. It is believed that many Bighorn sheep used to roam these lands. "Carneros" is a Spanish word that means "rams," which are male sheep.
