When she was eight years old, Carola started performing at Stockholm's Miniteatern. She also went to Adolf Fredrik's Music School. In 1977, Carola won a talent show. Carola's Amazing Music Journey
Starting Out and Främling (1981–1989)

In 1981, a Swedish music promoter named Bert Karlsson met Carola. She was 15 years old and had performed on a TV show. He offered her a chance to join Melodifestivalen in 1982. This is the Swedish competition to choose a song for the Eurovision Song Contest. Carola decided not to take the offer that year.
Later, songwriter Lasse Holm offered Carola two songs for Melodifestivalen 1983. One of them was "Främling." This song was chosen, and Carola won the right to represent Sweden at Eurovision in Munich. The song received top scores from all eleven juries. Carola performed at the Eurovision Song Contest 1983 on April 23. She finished third, and 6.1 million Swedes watched her. This was 84% of the country's population, a record for Sweden.
"Främling" became the title of Carola's first album. It sold over one million copies, making it the best-selling album in Swedish history. After Eurovision, Carola traveled around Europe. She promoted "Främling" and sang it in different languages. These included English ("Love Isn't Love"), German ("Fremder"), and Dutch. The album also had other hits like "Mickey" and "Tokyo." In December 1983, she released her first Christmas album, Julefrid med Carola. It sold 200,000 copies.
In 1984, Carola released two more popular pop/rock albums. Together, they sold over one million copies. "Tommy tycker om mig" and "Hunger" became big hits in Sweden. She later went to Japan and recorded a song in Japanese. In 1985, the Bee Gees worked with her on the album Runaway. The Gibb brothers wrote the songs, and Maurice Gibb produced it. This album sold double platinum in Sweden the next year. Songs like "The Runaway" and "Brand New Heart" became very popular in Scandinavia. In 1987, Carola went on a church tour. After this, she took a break from her music career.
New Beginnings and Eurovision Victory (1990–1991)
In 1990, Carola returned to Melodifestivalen with "Mitt i ett äventyr" ("In the middle of an adventure"). The song came in second place. This meant she did not get to represent Sweden at Eurovision that year. Her comeback album, Much More, was released and earned a gold award in Sweden. However, Carola and songwriter Stephan Berg were already planning another try for Eurovision.
In 1991, she returned to Melodifestivalen with "Fångad av en stormvind" ("Captured by a lovestorm"). This song won the festival by a large margin. It became the Swedish entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 1991 in Rome. Many people thought Carola was a strong favorite to win. On the night of the contest, Sweden and France were tied for first place. Sweden won the contest because they had received more high scores during the voting. "Fångad av en stormvind" became a huge hit in Europe. After her victory, she released an international version of "Much More." She also went on a long tour to promote her music across Europe.
