The Story of Carolina Mall
Building a New Shopping Spot
The work to build Carolina Mall began in 1968. After a few years of construction, the mall officially opened on September 21, 1972. When it first opened, it had about 25 stores. One of the original main stores was Sears. A company named North Hills, Inc. was in charge of building this new shopping center.
Growing Bigger and Better
Over the years, Carolina Mall grew and added more stores. In 1987, a big department store called J. C. Penney joined the mall. This was a big change for shoppers in the area. Because of this new store, the J. C. Penney stores in downtown Concord and nearby Kannapolis closed down.
New Stores and a Food Court
In 1998, the mall got a major makeover. Many new stores opened, including popular brands like American Eagle Outfitters and LensCrafters. A new Staples store also opened, and the Sears store was updated. One of the most exciting additions was a brand new food court. This renovation also included updates to the Belk store and an expansion for J. C. Penney.
Changes and Challenges
A year later, in 1999, another very large mall called Concord Mills opened in the area. Concord Mills is more than twice the size of Carolina Mall. However, even with this new, bigger mall, Carolina Mall continued to do well. This was because Concord Mills focused more on entertainment and outlet stores, while Carolina Mall kept its traditional mall stores.
In April 2002, Carolina Mall got a new owner. It was sold to the Hull Property Group, which still owns and manages it today.
A Store Says Goodbye
On November 8, 2020, it was announced that the Sears store at Carolina Mall would be closing. This was part of a plan to close several Sears stores across the country. The Sears store at Carolina Mall officially closed its doors on January 24, 2021.
