How American Eagle Grew

American Eagle Outfitters began with the Silverman family. They already owned a clothing business called Silvermans Menswear. In the mid-1970s, Jerry and Mark Silverman wanted to make their company bigger. They decided to open new types of stores.
In 1977, they opened American Eagle Outfitters. It sold casual clothes, shoes, and accessories for men and women. The focus was on items for outdoor activities like hiking and camping. Stores were set up in shopping malls, and they also had a catalog. The company grew a lot during the 1980s.
By 1989, the owners decided to focus only on American Eagle Outfitters. They sold their other stores. At that time, there were 137 American Eagle Outfitters stores in 36 different states.
New Leadership and Focus
Even with plans for fast growth, American Eagle Outfitters struggled by 1991. The company was losing money. The Schottenstein family, who had owned half of the company since 1980, bought the rest of the company from the Silvermans.
With new leaders, American Eagle found its main style. They started selling casual, private label clothes for men and women. This means they sold clothes with their own brand name.
In 1994, the company started selling its shares on the NASDAQ stock exchange. This helped them get more money. They used this money to open over 90 new stores in just one year. New leaders joined in 1995 and 1996. This led to a change in who the company wanted to sell to. Over the next five years, their sales grew five times bigger, reaching $1 billion by 2000. American Eagle opened its first store in Canada in 2000.
As of January 30, 2016, the company had 949 American Eagle stores. They also had 97 stand-alone Aerie stores and 67 Aerie stores next to American Eagle stores. These were in malls and other locations in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong, China, and the United Kingdom. The company also had 21 stores run by partners in 10 other countries.
Products They Sell
On July 27, 2020, American Eagle Outfitters announced a new line of fitness wear. It is called "Offline" by Aerie. These clothes are for people who want outfits for both workouts and relaxing.
Company Headquarters
In 2007, American Eagle moved its main office to SouthSide Works in Pittsburgh. The buildings cost about $21 million. The addresses are 19 Hot Metal Street and 77 Hot Metal Street. The numbers 19 and 77 are special because the first store opened in 1977. The Southside Works Campus has a private parking garage, a special "lab store" for each brand, a photo studio, and a cafeteria. They also have offices in New York for design and production.
Stores Around the World
In June 2009, American Eagle signed a deal with M. H. Alshaya. This company is a big retailer in the Middle East. This deal helped American Eagle open its first stores outside North America. The first two opened in Dubai and Kuwait in March 2010. More stores opened later in places like Lebanon.
How Products Are Shipped
The company has large storage and shipping centers. These are located in Hazleton, Pennsylvania; Ottawa, Kansas; and Mississauga, Ontario.
American Eagle Stores
Inside the stores, clothes are placed on wooden shelves, tables, or racks. Clothes in AEO Factory stores use simple black hangers. Regular American Eagle stores use wooden hangers. You can often see a flat-screen TV in the back of the store. The floors are usually wood or concrete. The look of the store changes with the seasons and special sales.
Other Brands by American Eagle
American Eagle Outfitters owns several other clothing brands.
Aerie
In February 2006, American Eagle launched a new brand called Aerie. This brand is for young women aged 15 to 22. Aerie sells lingerie like bras and other undergarments. They also sell clothes for sleeping, relaxing, and active wear.
Aerie started as a small part of American Eagle. But it quickly became its own brand with its own stores. The first stand-alone Aerie store opened in August 2006 in Greenville, South Carolina. By December 2010, there were 147 stand-alone Aerie stores in the U.S. and Canada.
Aerie has a special campaign called #AerieREAL. This campaign promotes models' real bodies. They show that their models have not been changed in photos. This helps them stand against photo manipulation in media. Iskra Lawrence is a global role model for the Aerie brand.
Martin + Osa
This brand was launched in 2006. It was for men and women aged 28 to 40. It sold cashmere sweaters and casual clothes. It also sold products from other brands like Fred Perry and Ray-Ban. In March 2010, all 28 Martin + Osa stores were closed. The brand did not do well in the market.
77kids
In October 2008, American Eagle launched 77kids. This was a clothing line for children aged two to ten. At first, you could only buy these clothes online. Then, American Eagle opened its first 77kids store on July 15, 2010, in The Mall at Robinson in Pittsburgh. Eight more stores opened that year.
77kids stores had fun, interactive games and activities for children. This made shopping more enjoyable for kids. However, American Eagle Outfitters decided to sell or close all 22 77kids stores by July 2012. The brand was losing money. On August 3, 2012, American Eagle Outfitters sold 77kids. The new owners renamed the store "Ruum" in 2013.
Tailgate and Todd Snyder
In November 2015, American Eagle Outfitters bought the brand of fashion designer Todd Snyder. They also bought his Tailgate Clothing Company. Tailgate sells vintage-style college clothes. American Eagle wanted to become more popular with teenagers and college students.
