How American Eagle Grew

The Silverman family already owned a clothing business called Silvermans Menswear. In the mid-1970s, Jerry and Mark Silverman decided to start a new type of store. They wanted to sell different kinds of products to help their company grow.
In 1977, they opened American Eagle Outfitters. It sold casual clothes, shoes, and accessories for men and women. The stores focused on items for outdoor activities like hiking and camping. They opened stores in shopping malls and also had a catalog. The company grew steadily through the 1980s. By 1989, there were 137 American Eagle Outfitters stores in 36 states.
However, the company faced some challenges. By 1991, they were losing money. At this point, another family, the Schottensteins, bought the Silverman family's share of the company. This new leadership helped American Eagle find its true focus. They decided to sell casual, private-label clothing for young men and women.
In 1994, American Eagle Outfitters started selling shares on the NASDAQ stock exchange. This helped them get more money to open new stores. They opened over 90 new stores in just one year! By the year 2000, their sales had grown five times to $1 billion. The first American Eagle store in Canada opened in 2000.
As of 2016, the company had many American Eagle stores. They also had Aerie stores in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong, China, and the United Kingdom. They also had stores run by partners in 10 other countries.
What American Eagle Sells
In 2020, American Eagle Outfitters launched a new line of fitness wear. It's called "Offline" by Aerie. This line is for people who want clothes for both working out and relaxing.
Company Headquarters
In 2007, American Eagle moved its main office. It moved from Warrendale, Pennsylvania, to a more city-like area in Pittsburgh. The new headquarters are at the SouthSide Works complex. The buildings are located at 19 Hot Metal Street and 77 Hot Metal Street. These numbers are special because the first store opened in 1977. The Southside Works campus has a private parking garage, a special "lab store" for each brand, a photo studio, and a cafeteria. They also have offices in New York for design and production.
Stores Around the World
In 2009, American Eagle signed a deal with a company called M. H. Alshaya. This allowed American Eagle to open its first stores outside North America. The first two opened in Dubai and Kuwait in 2010. More stores followed in places like Lebanon and Egypt.
How Products Get to Stores
The company has large storage and shipping centers. These are located in Hazleton, Pennsylvania; Ottawa, Kansas; and Mississauga, Ontario. These centers help get clothes to all the stores.
Inside the Stores
When you walk into an American Eagle store, you'll see clothes on wooden shelves, tables, and racks. The clothes in American Eagle stores are usually on wooden hangers. There's often a flat-screen TV in the back of the store. The floors are usually wood or concrete. The way the store looks changes with the seasons and special sales.
Other Brands by American Eagle
American Eagle Outfitters owns several other clothing brands.
Aerie
In 2006, American Eagle launched Aerie. This brand sells lingerie (like bras and underwear) and other comfy clothes. It's designed for young women aged 15 to 22. Aerie also sells clothes for sleeping, active wear, and accessories.
Aerie started as a small part of American Eagle. But it quickly became its own brand with its own stores. The first stand-alone Aerie store opened in 2006 in Greenville, South Carolina. Aerie is known for its "AerieREAL" campaign. This campaign shows models' real bodies and does not use photo manipulation in its ads. They want to show that all body types are beautiful. Iskra Lawrence is a global role model for the brand.
Martin + Osa
This brand was launched in 2006. It was for older men and women, aged 28 to 40. It sold fancy items like cashmere sweaters and other casual clothes. However, all 28 Martin + Osa stores closed in 2010 because they were not doing well.
77kids
In 2008, American Eagle launched 77kids. This was a clothing line for children aged two to ten. At first, you could only buy these clothes online. But in 2010, the first 77kids store opened in Pittsburgh. The stores had fun games and activities for kids to play while their parents shopped.
In 2012, American Eagle Outfitters decided to sell or close all 22 77kids stores. The brand was losing money. Another company bought 77kids and later renamed it "Ruum."
Tailgate and Todd Snyder
In 2015, American Eagle Outfitters bought two new brands. These were Todd Snyder's own fashion label and his Tailgate Clothing Company. Tailgate sells vintage-style college sports apparel. American Eagle hoped these brands would become popular with teenagers and college students.
Unsubscribed
In 2020, American Eagle Outfitters created a new, higher-end brand called Unsubscribed. This brand focuses on good quality items that are made in a sustainable way. You can find these stores in fancy shopping areas.
