Carolina Mallol is a Spanish scientist born in Barcelona, Spain in 1973. She is a professor and researcher of archaeological science at the University of La Laguna in Tenerife, Spain. Archaeological science uses scientific methods to study ancient human history.

Becoming an Archaeologist

Carolina Mallol studied at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Spain. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in Geography and History. Later, she went to Harvard University in the United States. There, she completed another master's degree in Anthropology in 1999. In 2004, she earned her PhD in Anthropology.

For her PhD research, she received a special grant from the National Science Foundation. Her study looked at ancient soil from three very old sites. These sites were from the Lower Paleolithic period, which was a long time ago.

What She Does: Career and Research

Since 2014, Dr. Mallol has been a researcher and lecturer at the University of La Laguna. Before that, she held several important research positions. She worked in Spain and France, including at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). She also spent time as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University.

Dr. Mallol's main research focuses on early humans, called hominids, and how they used fire. This is known as pyrotechnology. She uses special techniques from soil science and biogeochemistry. These methods help her understand how ancient campfires were made and used.

She has studied campfire remains at many Neandertal sites. Some of these are in Spain, like El Salt and Abric del Pastor. These sites are near the town of Alcoy. She has also worked at Middle Paleolithic sites in France, Georgia, Armenia, and Uzbekistan.

Dr. Mallol has led several major research projects. These projects were funded by the Leakey Foundation. They focused on how Neanderthals used fire technology. She also worked on a project with MIT to understand ancient environments and diets. In 2014, she received a big grant from the European Research Council for her PALEOCHAR project.

Awards and Recognition

In 2013, Dr. Mallol received The UCLA Cotsen Prize in History. This award recognized her important work in the field.

In 2016, she was honored with the IUEM 8 March Prize. This prize is given annually by the University Institute of Women's Studies at the Universidad de la Laguna. It celebrates women with outstanding research achievements.
