Education and Early Career

Carolina Mallol studied Geography and History in Spain. She earned her first degrees from Universitat Rovira i Virgili. Later, she went to Harvard University in the United States. There, she earned her master's degree in 1999. She then completed her PhD in Anthropology in 2004. A PhD is a very high degree that shows you are an expert in your field. After her PhD, Dr. Mallol continued her research at Harvard University. She also worked in France at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). Since 2009, she has been a researcher and lecturer at the University of La Laguna in Spain.

Researching Ancient Humans

Dr. Mallol's main research focuses on early humans, called hominids, and how they used fire. She uses special methods from soil science and biogeochemistry. This helps her study the remains of ancient campfires.

Studying Fire at Neanderthal Sites

She has worked at many Neandertal sites. These include places like El Salt and Abric del Pastor in southeastern Spain, near the town of Alcoy. She has also studied sites in France, Georgia, Armenia, and Uzbekistan. Her work helps us learn how Neanderthals used fire for warmth, cooking, and protection.

Major Research Projects

Dr. Mallol has led several big research projects. These projects were funded by the Leakey Foundation. They focused on understanding how Neanderthals used fire technology. She also worked on a project with MIT to learn about the ancient environments and diets of early humans. In 2014, she received a special grant from the European Research Council for her PALEOCHAR project.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Mallol has received several awards for her important work.

  • In 2013, she was given The UCLA Cotsen Prize in History.
