Carolina Shores is a town in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. It is located near the border with South Carolina. In 2020, about 4,588 people lived there. This number has grown quite a bit over the years. For example, in 2010, the population was 3,048, and in 2000, it was 1,482.
Carolina Shores is part of the larger Wilmington area. The town was officially created in 1998. Before that, it was part of the nearby town of Calabash. The two towns decided to split after some disagreements about services like trash collection and rules for signs. Even today, the borders of Carolina Shores and Calabash are very close and sometimes even mix.
The town shares its name with a local country club. Interestingly, the name "Carolina Shores" can be a bit confusing because the town itself does not have a "shore" or border any large body of water.
Where is Carolina Shores?
Carolina Shores is in the southwestern part of Brunswick County. Its southwestern edge touches the South Carolina state line. The town of Calabash is right next to Carolina Shores to the south.
A major road, U.S. Route 17, runs along the northwestern side of the town. This highway can take you about 47 miles northeast to Wilmington. If you head southwest on the same highway, you'll reach Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in about 24 miles.
