Carpenter, Texas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Carpenter is a very small place in Texas, United States. It's not a city with its own government, but rather an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that are part of a larger county, not a separate town. Carpenter is located in western Wilson County, between the towns of La Vernia and St. Hedwig. You can find it along Farm to Market Road 1346, which is a special road that helps connect farms to markets. Even though it's small, Carpenter is considered part of the larger San Antonio area, known as the Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The Story of Carpenter

Carpenter has a simple but interesting history. It was founded in 1893 and got its name from a person who owned land nearby.

How Carpenter Began

When Carpenter first started, it was an important stop along the San Antonio and Mexican Gulf Railroad. Trains would stop there, which helped the community grow.

Early Life in Carpenter

In the early 1900s, Carpenter was a busy little place. It had a few important businesses:

  • A cotton gin: This was a machine that separated cotton fibers from their seeds, which was very important for farmers.
  • A general store: This was like a small supermarket where people could buy all sorts of things, from food to tools.
  • A post office: This is where people sent and received mail. Joseph Winkler was the person in charge of the post office, called the postmaster.

Changes Over Time

Life in Carpenter began to change. The post office closed in 1928. Later, the railroad line that ran through Carpenter was also closed. When the trains stopped coming, the community became much quieter. Today, only a small group of homes remain in Carpenter.
