Where is Carrara Located?

Carrara is found next to US Route 95. This is a major highway in the United States. It's about 8.5 miles southeast of a town called Beatty.

Nearby Features

An old railroad line, once used by the Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad, was about half a mile southwest of the town. There's also an old road that used to be a railroad track. This road goes for about 3 miles northeast into Carrara Canyon.

The Marble Quarry

This road leads to an old marble quarry. A quarry is a place where stone is dug out of the ground. This marble quarry is on the side of the Bare Mountains. It's about 1400 feet higher than the town itself.

Why Was Carrara Built?

Carrara was named after a famous type of marble called Carrara marble. This marble comes from Italy and is known for its beauty. The town was likely built because of the marble quarry nearby. People hoped to mine and sell this valuable stone.

What Happened to Carrara?

A post office was opened in Carrara in 1913. This means people were living and working there. However, the post office closed just eleven years later, in 1924. This suggests that the town didn't last very long. When the marble mining slowed down or stopped, people likely moved away, turning Carrara into the ghost town it is today.
