Where the Carryduff River Flows
Starting Point of the River
The Carryduff River begins in an area called Killinure. It starts in wet, boggy land at the bottom of Ouley Hill, which is 186 metres tall. Many small ditches feed water into the river as it flows through farms south of Carryduff town.
Journey to the Lagan River
As the river continues, it goes past the Knockbracken reservoir. It then flows north through a gap in the Castlereagh Hills. In this part, it is sometimes called Purdy's Burn. Finally, the river reaches the Lagan Valley and joins the River Lagan near Minnowburn.
In some parts of towns, the Carryduff River has been covered over. It flows through underground pipes.
How Carryduff Village Grew
The village of Carryduff first started where important roads met. These roads included routes from Belfast heading south to Downpatrick and Newcastle. Also, roads from Hillsborough going east and west towards Strangford Lough met here. All these routes crossed the Carryduff River, which helped the village grow.
River Water Quality
The water in the Carryduff River has been checked by the Department of the Environment's water service. Sadly, its water quality has been rated as "BAD". This means the water is not very clean.
Fun and Leisure
The river is a popular spot for people from Killinure to go swimming.
