Carsten Ramelow (born March 20, 1974) is a German former professional footballer. He played as a central defender or a defensive midfielder.
Carsten was known for his strong tackles and good defensive skills. He played professionally for Hertha BSC and Bayer Leverkusen for 17 years. He also played nearly 50 games for the German national team. He represented Germany in one World Cup and one European Championship.

Club Career: Playing for Hertha and Bayer
Carsten Ramelow was born in Berlin, Germany. He started his football journey at a local club called Hertha BSC. He played five seasons there. His first game was on April 25, 1992, when he was 18 years old.
In January 1996, Ramelow joined Bayer Leverkusen, a team in the top German league, the Bundesliga. He quickly became a key player for them. Bayer Leverkusen often finished high in the league standings with him on the team.
In his first game for Bayer Leverkusen, he scored two goals! This helped his team win 2–0 against F.C. Hansa Rostock. One of his biggest achievements with Bayer Leverkusen was reaching the final of the 2001–02 UEFA Champions League in 2002. This is a huge competition for top European clubs. Even though they lost to Real Madrid in the final, it was a great achievement.
Carsten played less often from 2006 to 2008 because of injuries. He decided to retire from football in March 2008, when he was 34 years old.
International Career: Playing for Germany
Carsten Ramelow first played for the German national team on October 10, 1998. He played a total of 46 games for his country. These games are called "caps."
He was part of the German squad for the UEFA Euro 2000 tournament. He also played in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. In the 2002 World Cup, he played in five matches. Germany reached the final but lost. During a group stage game against Cameroon, he received a red card.
Ramelow was expected to be chosen for the Euro 2004 tournament in Portugal. However, he announced his retirement from international football just one week before the team was picked.
