Carsten Ramelow (born 20 March 1974) is a German former professional footballer. He was known for playing as a central defender or a defensive midfielder. A central defender helps protect the goal, while a defensive midfielder plays in front of the defenders to stop attacks and start new ones.
Carsten Ramelow played professionally for Hertha BSC and Bayer Leverkusen for 17 years. He played almost 50 times for the German national team. He also represented Germany in one World Cup and one European Championship.

Playing for Clubs: Carsten Ramelow's Career
Carsten Ramelow was born in Berlin. He started his football journey at his local club, Hertha BSC. He played his first professional game on 25 April 1992, when he was 18 years old. This was in the 2. Bundesliga, which is Germany's second-highest football league.
In the 1992–93 season, he helped Hertha's reserve team reach the final of the DFB-Pokal. This is Germany's main cup competition. However, they lost the final to Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Moving to Bayer Leverkusen
In January 1996, Ramelow joined Bayer Leverkusen, a team in the Bundesliga. The Bundesliga is Germany's top football league. He quickly became an important player for the team. In his first game for Leverkusen, he scored two goals.
Bayer Leverkusen often finished in the top four teams in the Bundesliga during his time there. In the 2001–02 UEFA Champions League season, Ramelow played a big part in Leverkusen reaching the final of the UEFA Champions League. This is Europe's biggest club competition. They lost the final to Real Madrid.
Carsten Ramelow played less often from 2006 to 2008 because of injuries. He announced his retirement from football in March 2008, when he was 34 years old.
Playing for Germany: International Career
Carsten Ramelow first played for the German national team on 10 October 1998. This was in a qualifying match for the UEFA Euro 2000 tournament. He played a total of 46 "caps" for Germany. A cap is a term used to mean a player has represented their country in an international match.
He was part of the German squad for the UEFA Euro 2000 tournament. He was also selected for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. In the 2002 World Cup, he played five games as Germany reached the final. He received a red card in a group stage match against Cameroon. Germany finished as runners-up in that World Cup.
Ramelow decided to retire from international football in 2004. This was just before the squad for UEFA Euro 2004 was chosen.
