How Carter Got Its Name

Carter was not always called Carter. Its original name was Sidney. In 1905, the community's name was changed to honor a very important person.

The town was renamed after Thomas H. Carter. He was a significant figure in Montana's history. Thomas H. Carter was the first person to represent Montana in the United States Congress.

Carter is found in the western part of Chouteau County. It is located along U.S. Route 87. This road connects Carter to other nearby towns.

If you travel northeast on U.S. Route 87 for about 14 miles (23 km), you will reach Fort Benton. This is the main town for Chouteau County. If you go southwest for about 26 miles (42 km), you will arrive at Great Falls.
