How Carter Got Its Name

Carter was named after an important family. This family was known for being Baptist preachers. They originally came from Albemarle County, Virginia.

The Carter Family's Story

The Carter family moved to a place called Sago, West Virginia in the 1840s. One of the key members was Henry T. Carter.

Henry T. Carter first lived on a farm owned by Mr. Alfred Morgan in the Sago area. Later, he bought his own land about two miles south. There, he raised a large family with his wife, Miss Emerson.

Henry T. Carter was a very respected person in the community. He worked hard and was known for having a great memory. For many years, he helped lead the Sago Baptist church as one of its deacons.

Henry Carter's Children

Henry and Miss Emerson had ten children. Their names were John, Mary, Henry, Thomas Addison, Mardonius, George, Page, Eliza, Lena, and Delia. Sadly, Mardonius passed away when he was young from scarlet fever.
