Where is Cartirana?
Cartirana is located on a flat area, like a high plain, about 2 kilometers (just over a mile) northwest of Sabiñánigo. The town sits at an altitude of 857 meters (about 2,812 feet) above sea level.
A Look at Cartirana's Past
Cartirana has a long history! It was first mentioned way back in the year 1100. At that time, a man named April wrote in his will that he owned several houses and even a palace there. In the 12th century, some properties in Cartirana were owned by important monasteries like Fanlo and Montearagón.
By the late 1400s, there were 8 houses in Cartirana. However, by the mid-1800s, this number had dropped to just 5 houses with about 30 people living there. In 1981, the population had grown a bit to 51 people.
Originally, Cartirana was like a neighborhood of the nearby city of Jaca. But in 1834, it became its own municipality, meaning it could manage itself. Over time, other nearby towns like Aurín and Borres joined with Cartirana for management. Later, Larres also joined. Today, all these places are part of the larger Sabiñánigo municipality.
How Many People Live Here?
The number of people living in Cartirana has changed a lot over the years. In the mid-1800s, there were around 260-270 people. This number went up and down, reaching over 500 people in the 1950s. However, by the 1960s and 1970s, the population decreased as parts of the municipality joined Sabiñánigo.
Since the year 2000, Cartirana's population has been quite small, but it has slowly grown.
- In 2000, there were 42 people.
- By 2005, there were 49 people.
- In 2008, the population reached 53 people.
Traditional Buildings
Cartirana's streets are not perfectly straight, and many of the old buildings have been updated. However, you can still find some examples of the town's traditional architecture.
- Houses like "Casa Ubieto," "Casa Pablo," and "Casa Latas" are notable.
- "Casa Escolano" is a great example of the local building style. It features a special type of chimney called a "serrablesa" chimney, unique window frames, and a traditional oven.
Other important buildings include the San Martín parish church and the Santa Lucía chapel. The town also has an old laundry area and water supply points that are interesting to see.
San Martín Parish Church
The old church of San Martín was once part of a larger church district. In 1499, the church had an image of San Martín as its only altar piece. It also held silver cups and nine special books used for church services.
Today, the inside of the church looks modern. However, the outside features a tall, slender tower. This tower looks similar to those found in the Gállego area. Inside, near the choir and the northern wall, you can see an old doorway with a special arch. This arch has a "horseshoe" shape, similar to the Mozarabic style found in the Gállego region.
Santa Lucía Chapel
A small chapel was built in 1701 to honor Santa Lucía. By 1981, the chapel was in ruins, but it was lovingly rebuilt and restored that year.
Water for the Town
Cartirana gets its water from tanks located on the nearby Santa Lucía hill. These tanks also supply water to Sabiñánigo, the main town of the municipality. For a long time, the town also got water from natural springs located behind the church in a low area. The old washing place and these springs have recently been updated.
Water from one of the springs is collected in a small pool. This water is then used for the nearby green gardens. In the early 1990s, a new water spring was found. It was developed into a new fountain called "La Fontañona," which is located just below the dam.
Fun Festivities
The main celebrations in Cartirana are held in honor of San Martín on November 11th. Smaller festivities take place on December 13th, celebrating Santa Lucía.
