About Cartridge Creek

Where is Cartridge Creek?

You can find Cartridge Creek in the state of California. It is located near the city of Fresno, California. The creek runs through Kings Canyon National Park. This park is famous for its deep canyons and giant trees. It is a popular place for hiking and exploring nature.

How Cartridge Creek Got Its Name

Cartridge Creek received its unique name in the 1870s. A man named Frank Lewis was on a hunting trip. He was with a young friend, Harrison Hill. During their hunt, they encountered a bear.

Frank Lewis wounded the bear. He asked Harrison to finish the hunt. But Harrison got very excited. He accidentally emptied all the bullets, or "cartridges," from his rifle without firing a shot. Because so many cartridges were used (or wasted!) during this exciting moment, Frank Lewis decided to name the creek "Cartridge Creek." It was a memorable event for them.

A path for sheep used to cross above the creek's starting point. This old trail shows that people have used this area for a long time.
