Discovering Carus, Oregon
Carus is a quiet community in Oregon. It has a unique history. Even though it's not a big city, it plays a part in the story of Clackamas County.
A Look Back in Time
Carus had its own post office a long time ago. It opened in 1887 and stayed open until 1907. People think the name "Carus" might have come from a mistake. Someone might have misread "Carns" on the application form for the post office.
It's not clear if the name was meant to honor a family. Or if it was named after a place in another state. The first post office was in a building called the Fred Vonder Ahe House. This house is now in Molalla. David Hunter was the very first postmaster. He was in charge of the mail.
Carus in the Early 1900s
In 1915, Carus was a busy little place. It had two sawmills. Sawmills are places where logs are cut into lumber. This was important for building things.
The community also had stagecoaches. A stagecoach is like an old-fashioned bus. One stagecoach went to Oregon City every day. Another went to Canby twice a day. This helped people travel and send goods.
Schools and Community Life
By 1990, Carus still had a school and a church. These are often central to small communities. Carus Elementary School is part of the Canby School District. This means local kids go to school there.
There is also a cemetery near Carus. It is a burial ground for people from the area.
