Caryville is a small, quiet community in Wisconsin, United States. It's not a city or a town with its own government. Instead, it's an unincorporated community located within the larger Town of Rock Creek. You can find Caryville in Dunn County, right on the south bank of the Chippewa River. It's easy to spot along State Highway 85, especially near where Dunn County Highway H crosses the river.

For many years, getting across the Chippewa River near Caryville was a bit different. From 1910 to 1964, a special boat called a ferry carried people and cars. This ferry operated where the Highway H bridge is now. The Caryville ferry was one of six ferries that helped people cross the Chippewa River in this area. The last person to run the Caryville Ferry was F. William (Bill) Alf. He operated it from 1949 until 1964, when the bridge was finally built. His sons, Frederick, James, Rodney, and Arthur, often helped him.

History of Caryville

Caryville began in the middle of the 1800s. By 1895, it was a busy little place. It had its own train station, a post office where you could send letters, and even a Pony Express office. The Pony Express was a special mail service that used riders on horses to deliver messages very quickly. In 1882, a person named Menzus R. Bump was chosen to be the postmaster for Caryville. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office.

Some people who are interested in ghost stories and mysteries find Caryville very interesting. There are local legends about certain places in the area being haunted. These stories are about Sand Hill Cemetery, the old Spring Brook School, and Spring Brook Lutheran Church. People also tell tales about 240th Avenue and the Meridean Slough having strange happenings.

Fun Things to Do in Caryville

Caryville is a great spot for outdoor activities. It's located right along the Chippewa River State Trail. This trail is perfect for biking and walking. It was once a railroad line used by the Milwaukee Road, but now it's a fun path for everyone to enjoy.
