The Casa Amatller is a super cool building in Barcelona, Spain. It's designed in a special style called Modernisme, which was popular in Catalunya. A famous architect named Josep Puig i Cadafalch created it.

This amazing house is part of a famous group of buildings in Barcelona. People call this group the "Block of Discord" (Illa de la Discòrdia). It's called that because each building looks very different and unique! Casa Amatller stands next to two other important buildings, Casa Batlló and Casa Lleó-Morera.

The Casa Amatller was first built in 1875. Later, between 1898 and 1900, it was completely redesigned. This was for a rich chocolatier (someone who makes chocolate!) named Antoni Amatller. He also loved archaeology, which is the study of old things.

After Antoni Amatller passed away in 1910, his daughter lived in the house until 1960. Because the Amatller family owned it for so long, the inside of the house still looks almost exactly like it did in 1900! Today, it's a historic house museum where you can take tours. It also has a café and a study center for art.

What is Modernisme?

Modernisme is a special art and architecture style. It was popular in Catalonia, Spain, around the late 1800s and early 1900s. Think of it as a unique Spanish version of Art Nouveau.

This style often uses:

  • Curvy, natural shapes
  • Colorful tiles and stained glass
  • Detailed ironwork
  • Designs inspired by nature, like flowers and animals

Architects like Josep Puig i Cadafalch used these ideas. They made buildings that looked like works of art!

The "Block of Discord"

Imagine a city block where three amazing buildings stand side-by-side. Each one is designed by a different famous architect. They all have their own unique style, making them look very different from each other. That's why this block is called the "Block of Discord"!

The Casa Amatller is one of these special buildings. It shows off the Modernisme style with its unique roof and decorations. It's a fun place to visit and see how different architects created their masterpieces right next to each other.

A Chocolatier's Home

Antoni Amatller was a very successful chocolatier. He loved art and collecting old things. When he hired Josep Puig i Cadafalch, he wanted a home that was both beautiful and practical. The architect designed the house to fit Antoni's interests and lifestyle.

The house has many special details. These include sculptures and decorations that tell stories. Some even show things related to chocolate making! It's like the house itself is a piece of art that tells about its owner.

Casa Amatller Today

Today, the Casa Amatller is a popular place to visit. It's a house museum, which means you can explore the rooms and see how people lived over 100 years ago. You can see the original furniture and decorations.

It's also home to the Amatller Institute for Hispanic Art. This is a place where people study Spanish art. Plus, there's a cozy café where you can relax. Taking a tour of Casa Amatller is a great way to step back in time and learn about art and history!
