The Story of Casa Sanchez
Starting with Tortillas
Roberto and Isabel Sanchez came from Zacatecas, Mexico, to San Francisco in 1923. They started a tortilla factory called R. Sanchez & Co. in Northern California. Back then, tortillas were sold by the pound, wrapped in paper and string, just like in Mexico. After Roberto passed away, his wife and their three young children took over the family business.
R. Sanchez & Co. first opened in the Fillmore district of San Francisco. This area had many Hispanic families at the time. In 1968, the company moved to the Mission District. This was because more Latino residents were moving into the Mission area. Soon after, Robert Jr. and Martha Sanchez decided to make fresh, packaged salsas. This helped their company stand out from other tortilla factories.
Meet Jimmy the Cornman
Casa Sanchez makes some of the best-selling salsas in California. This is based on reports from a company called Nielsen. Casa Sanchez is well-known as a San Francisco favorite. The company's fun logo is "Jimmy the Cornman." It shows a cartoon boy wearing a sombrero and riding an ear of corn like a rocket!
This logo was inspired by Jimmy Sanchez, who is the youngest of the third generation in the family. It also got ideas from when the first person landed on the moon. That's why the company's slogan is: "flavor out of this world!"
Casa Sanchez Today
Today, the Sanchez family still runs the company. The fourth generation of the family is now helping to grow the brand. Casa Sanchez has created more than a dozen different Mexican food products. They have also grown to sell their products all along the West Coast. They are a leader in selling fresh salsas and tortilla chips together.
Casa Sanchez is also very involved in its community. They often help sponsor Latino events in the Bay Area. The company has also given over $100,000 to different charities.
In 1999, Casa Sanchez got national attention, even from Forbes magazine. They started a new marketing idea: if you got a tattoo of "Jimmy the Cornman," you would get free lunch at the Casa Sanchez restaurant for life! This special offer came back in March 2010 and was very popular. The restaurant closed its doors in 2012.
