Royal Visit to Las Hurdes
|
King Alfonso XIII's Trip
In 1922, Alfonso XIII, who was the King of Spain at the time, visited the Las Hurdes region. He wanted to show that the royal family cared about this faraway area. A famous doctor and writer named Gregorio Marañón went with the young king as his guide. The king and his group stayed in military tents set up near Casares de las Hurdes.
An Unusual Incident
During the king's visit, something interesting happened. The king's helpers were worried about the quality of local milk. Because of this, the king was only drinking black coffee. A local village leader wanted to help. He brought the king a small jug of milk. He told the king, "Your Majesty, this milk is completely safe." The king drank it with his coffee. He later found out that the milk came from a very unusual source.
