Caseyville is a small place in Union County, Kentucky, United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it is a group of homes and businesses that does not have its own local government. Caseyville is located right on the Ohio River. You can find it about 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) west of a town called Sturgis.
Caseyville's Role in the Civil War
During the American Civil War, Caseyville became an important spot. Many people living there supported the Confederate side. This was the southern group of states that fought against the Union (the northern states).
Confederate Activity in Caseyville
In October 1862, Confederate soldiers used Caseyville as a base. They were involved in small fights, known as skirmishes, in the area. These fights were part of the larger conflict of the Civil War.
A Standoff on the Ohio River
One day, Confederate troops took control of a Union steamboat. This led to a tense situation. Union soldiers were stationed at a place called Battery Rock. They faced off against the Confederate troops in Caseyville. It was a "standoff," meaning neither side could easily win or move forward.
Eventually, the Confederate soldiers left Caseyville. The Union Army then entered the community. To make sure the town would not help the Confederates again, the Union Army gave an order. They required the town to prevent any Confederate troops from coming back into Caseyville. This helped the Union Army control the area along the Ohio River.
