Casper Ruud (born December 22, 1998) is a professional tennis player from Norway. He reached a career-high ranking of world No. 2 in September 2022, which is the highest ranking ever for a Norwegian tennis player. Casper has won 13 big tennis titles, including a Masters 1000 event in Madrid in 2025. He also finished second at three major tournaments: the 2022 French Open, 2022 US Open, and 2023 French Open. He was also a runner-up at the 2022 ATP Finals.
From September 2021 to November 2023, Casper was ranked among the top 10 tennis players for 113 weeks in a row. When he was a junior player, he was ranked world No. 1. In doubles, his highest ranking was world No. 133. He achieved this after reaching the quarterfinals at 2021 Wimbledon Championships with his partner André Göransson. Casper is known for his calm and professional behavior on the court. He even won the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award in 2022.

Starting as a Junior Player
Casper Ruud showed promise in junior tennis. In 2015, he reached the third round of the French Open boys' singles and the US Open boys' singles. He also made it to the semifinals in doubles at Wimbledon with his partner Miomir Kecmanović.
Becoming Junior World No. 1 and Turning Pro in 2016
Casper started 2016 as the world No. 1 junior player. He was the first Norwegian to achieve this. That year, he aimed to play in professional tournaments and improve his ATP rankings. He won his first professional tournament in Spain in February.
In September, Casper won his first ATP Challenger tournament, the Copa Sevilla, on his very first try. This made him one of the youngest players ever to win a Challenger event. He even beat a top-ranked player, Iñigo Cervantes, who was No. 75 in the world. This win earned him a spot in his first ATP World Tour 250 series tournament, the 2016 Chengdu Open. He finished 2016 ranked No. 225 in the world.
2017: Reaching ATP Semifinals
In 2017, Casper played in the 2017 Rio Open, an ATP 500 event. He made it to his first ATP-level semifinal, becoming the youngest player to reach an ATP 500 semifinal since Borna Ćorić in 2014. This helped him reach a new career-high ranking of No. 133. He also played in his first ATP Masters 1000 tournament, the 2017 Miami Open.
2018: Grand Slam Debuts
In 2018, Casper played in his first Grand Slam tournament, the 2018 Australian Open. He was the first Norwegian man in 17 years to qualify for a Grand Slam main draw. He won his first match there before losing in the second round. He also qualified for the 2018 French Open and the 2018 US Open for the first time. In July, he had a big win against David Ferrer at the 2018 Swedish Open. He ended 2018 ranked No. 112.
2019: Breaking into the Top 100
In 2019, Casper reached the semifinals of the 2019 Brasil Open. This result helped him enter the top 100 of the ATP rankings for the first time, reaching No. 94. He was the first Norwegian to do this since his father, Christian Ruud, in 1994.
In April, Casper reached his first ever ATP Tour final at the 2019 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships. He lost the final, but he matched his father's achievement of reaching an ATP Tour final. At the 2019 Italian Open, he won his first match in an ATP Tour Masters 1000 tournament. He reached the third round of the 2019 French Open, where he played against tennis legend Roger Federer.
2020: First ATP Title and Top 25 Ranking
In February 2020, Casper won his first ATP Tour title at the 2020 Argentina Open. He became the first Norwegian tennis player to win an ATP Tour title. This win also pushed him past his father's highest ranking, making him the highest-ranked Norwegian player in ATP history at No. 34. Two weeks later, he reached another final at the 2020 Chile Open.
At the 2020 US Open, he reached the third round. At the 2020 Italian Open, he made it to the semifinals, becoming the first Norwegian to do so. This result moved him up to a new career-high ranking of No. 30. Another semifinal appearance at the 2020 Hamburg European Open helped him reach No. 25 in the rankings.
2021: Five Titles and Top 10 Debut
At the 2021 Australian Open, Casper reached the fourth round of a major tournament for the first time. This matched his father's best result at the Australian Open. He then reached the semifinals at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters and the 2021 Mutua Madrid Open. His performance in Madrid helped him enter the top 20 for the first time, reaching No. 16.
In May, Casper won his second ATP title at the 2021 Geneva Open. At 2021 Wimbledon Championships, he reached the quarterfinals in men's doubles. In July, he won two more titles back-to-back at the 2021 Swedish Open and the 2021 Swiss Open Gstaad. A week later, he won his fourth title of the season at 2021 Generali Open Kitzbühel, making it five career titles. He became the first ATP player since Andy Murray in 2011 to win three titles in three weeks.
On September 13, Casper reached the world No. 10 ranking, becoming the first Norwegian player to be in the top 10. He was also the youngest player in the top 10 at 22 years old. At the end of September, he played for Team Europe in the 2021 Laver Cup, which his team won. In October, he won his first hardcourt tournament at the 2021 San Diego Open. He also qualified for the 2021 ATP Finals for the first time, where he reached the semifinals. Casper finished 2021 as world No. 8.
2022: Two Major Finals and World No. 2 Ranking
Casper started 2022 by winning his seventh ATP singles title at the 2022 Argentina Open. He then reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final at the 2022 Miami Open, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz. This result helped him reach a career-high ranking of No. 7. He also successfully defended his title at the 2022 Geneva Open.
At the 2022 French Open, Casper made history by reaching his first ever major quarterfinal, then semifinal, and finally the final. He was the first Norwegian man to reach a Grand Slam final. He lost to Rafael Nadal in the final, but his performance moved him to a new career-high ranking of world No. 6, and then No. 5. He also won the 2022 Swiss Open Gstaad for the second year in a row.
At the 2022 US Open, Casper was one of five players who could become world No. 1. He reached his second major final, but lost to Carlos Alcaraz. As a result, he climbed to a new career-high ranking of world No. 2 on September 12, 2022. At the 2022 ATP Finals, he reached the final, but lost to Novak Djokovic. Casper also won the ATP Sportsman of the Year award for his excellent behavior on tour.
2023: Another French Open Final
Casper started 2023 by playing in the 2023 United Cup for Norway. He had an early exit at the 2023 Australian Open, losing in the second round. He then took a break from competition.
He won his tenth ATP title at the clay court 2023 Estoril Open. On his way to the title, he recorded his 100th win on clay courts. This made him only the second player born in 1995 or later to achieve this milestone. This win moved him back to world No. 4.
At the 2023 French Open, Casper reached the quarterfinals for the second year in a row. He then won his semifinal match against Alexander Zverev to reach his third major final. He lost the final to Novak Djokovic. After the 2023 Rolex Paris Masters, Casper left the top ten rankings for the first time since 2021.
2024: Barcelona Champion and Olympic Quarterfinal
In 2024, Casper helped Team Norway reach the quarterfinals at the 2024 United Cup. He reached back-to-back finals at the 2024 Los Cabos Open and the 2024 Abierto Mexicano Telcel.
At the 2024 Miami Open, he recorded his 100th win on hardcourts. This made him a rare player to have over 100 wins on both hard and clay courts. At the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters, he reached the final after beating world No. 1 Novak Djokovic. The following week, he won the 2024 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, which was his biggest title yet and his first tournament win above the ATP 250 level.
He also won the 2024 Geneva Open for the third time, becoming the first player to do so. This was his 12th career title and 11th on clay. At the Paris Olympics, he became the first Norwegian player to reach the quarterfinals.
2025: First ATP 1000 Title
At the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open, Casper reached his third Masters 1000 final. He won the final against Jack Draper, earning his first "Big Title" and returning to the top 10 in the singles rankings.
Playing Style
Casper Ruud is known as a clay-court specialist. This means he plays his best tennis on clay courts, where he has won 12 of his 13 titles. He is an offensive baseliner, which means he likes to hit powerful shots from the back of the court. His best shot is his forehand, which he hits with a lot of spin. His backhand is also consistent.
Casper has a strong serve that can reach speeds of up to 193 kilometers per hour (120 mph). He uses his serve to gain an advantage in points. He is also praised for being very calm on the court and rarely showing strong emotions.
Personal Life
Casper Ruud's father, Christian Ruud, was also a professional tennis player. Casper has two sisters, Caroline and Charlotte. He and his father both enjoy playing golf. He grew up in Snarøya, Norway, and his tennis idol was Rafael Nadal. Casper is a fan of the Liverpool FC soccer team.
Casper has been dating Maria Galligani since 2018, and they announced their engagement in November 2024. They live in Oslo. Maria studied psychology and has a master's degree in the subject. They also have a dog named Bajas.
