Cassandra Potter's Curling Journey
Starting Young in Curling
Cassandra Potter was born in Bemidji, Minnesota. This city is a very popular place for curling. She started playing curling when she was just 5 years old. To get better at the game, she watched Canadian curling competitions on TV. This helped her learn the smart strategies of curling.
In 1998, Cassandra was an alternate (a backup player) for the U.S. team at the World Junior Curling Championships. Her team finished in 5th place.
Winning Gold at Junior Championships
In 2002, Cassandra returned to the Junior Championships. This time, she was the skip, or captain, of her team. She led her United States team to win the gold medal! They beat the team from Sweden, led by Matilda Mattsson.
The next year, in 2003, Cassie went back to the World Junior Championships. Her team made it to the final game again. But this time, they lost to Marliese Miller's team from Canada, earning a silver medal.
Reaching the Olympics and World Championships
In 2005, Cassandra competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials and National Championships. She won these events, which meant she would represent the USA. She got to play in both the 2006 Winter Olympics and the 2005 World Women's Curling Championship.
At the 2005 World Championships, her team won a silver medal. They lost to Anette Norberg's Swedish team in the final. Because of her great performance, Cassie was named USA Curling's Female Athlete of the Year in 2005.
Cassie made a very important shot in the final match of the 2006 Olympic Trials. This shot helped her team qualify for the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.
Olympic Experience and Team Changes
The 2006 Olympics were a bit tough for Cassandra and her team. They lost five of their first six games. They ended up with a record of 2 wins and 7 losses in the first round.
After the Olympics, the team changed some players for the 2006 U.S. World Team Trials. Cassandra became the alternate player, and Jessica Schultz became the skip. The team finished in fourth place at these trials. Later, the team went back to their original Olympic lineup for other competitions.
In 2012, Cassandra and her team reached the semifinals of the 2012 United States Women's Curling Championship. This win helped them qualify for the 2013 United States Olympic Curling Trials.
Cassandra Potter's Life Outside Curling
Family and Hobbies
Cassandra got engaged right after the 2006 Winter Olympics. She got married in 2007. She studied graphic design at Bemidji State University. When she's not curling, she loves fishing and listening to music. She is also a big fan of the Minnesota Twins baseball team.
When she was 12, doctors found out Cassandra had a heart murmur. This is a small sound in the heart caused by a minor heart problem. But it's not serious and doesn't stop her from living her daily life or playing curling.
