Cassandra Potter's Curling Journey
Starting Young
Cassandra Potter was born in Bemidji, Minnesota. This city is a place where curling is very popular. She started playing curling when she was just 5 years old. She learned a lot about the game's strategies by watching Canadian curling matches on TV.
In 1998, Cassie was an alternate (a backup player) for the U.S. team at the World Junior Curling Championships. Her team finished in 5th place.
Junior Success
Cassie returned to the Junior Championships in 2002. This time, she was the skip (the team captain who makes the big decisions). She led her United States team to win the gold medal! They beat Matilda Mattsson's team from Sweden in the final game.
In 2003, Cassie went back to the World Junior Championships again. She made it to the final match once more. However, this time her team lost to Marliese Miller's team from Canada, earning a silver medal.
Olympic Dreams and World Championships
In 2005, Cassie competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials and National Championships. She won these events, which meant she would represent the USA at both the 2006 Winter Olympics and the 2005 World Women's Curling Championship.
At the 2005 World Championships, her team won another silver medal. They lost to Anette Norberg's Swedish team in the final. Because of her great performance, Cassie was named USA Curling's Female Athlete of the Year in 2005. She made a very important shot in the final match of the 2006 Olympic Trials. This shot helped her team qualify for the Winter Olympics in Turin.
Olympic Experience and Team Changes
The 2006 Olympics were a bit tough for Cassie and her team. They lost five of their first six matches. They finished the tournament with a record of 2 wins and 7 losses.
After the Olympics, the team changed some players for the 2006 U.S. World Team Trials. Cassie became the alternate, and Jessica Schultz became the skip. The team finished in fourth place at the trials. Later, the team went back to their original Olympic lineup for other events.
In 2012, Cassie and her team reached the semifinals of the 2012 United States Women's Curling Championship. This win helped them qualify for the 2013 United States Olympic Curling Trials.
Cassandra's Life Outside Curling
Cassandra Potter got married in 2007. She studied graphic design at Bemidji State University. When she's not curling, she enjoys fishing and listening to music. She is also a big fan of the Minnesota Twins baseball team.
When she was 12, doctors found that Cassie had a heart murmur. This is a small heart condition, but it is not serious and does not stop her from living her daily life or playing sports.
Cassie comes from a family of curlers! She played with her older sister Jamie for many years. Her parents, Liz and Tim, have won the U.S. Mixed Curling Championships four times. Her grandparents and great-grandparents were also curlers. Her father, Tim, has also won two Men's National Championships and a World bronze medal in 1993.
