Cassius was a very large male saltwater crocodile. He was once known by the Guinness World Records as the biggest crocodile living in a zoo! He was about 5.48 metres (18 ft 0 in) long and weighed around 1,300 kilograms (2,870 lb). Cassius lived at the Marineland Crocodile Park, a zoo on Green Island, Queensland, Australia.
Cassius first got his world record title in 2011. But in 2012, another crocodile named Lolong from the Philippines became the biggest. Lolong was even longer, at 6.17 m (20 ft 3 in). When Lolong died in 2013, Cassius became the world's largest captive crocodile again. He held this record until he passed away in November 2024.
A crocodile expert, Professor Graeme Webb, said that Cassius was an "old, tough crocodile." When he was caught in 1984, he was thought to be between 30 and 80 years old. Professor Webb believed Cassius might have been around 120 years old in 2023.
How Cassius Was Caught
Cassius was known as a problem crocodile. He used to attack boats in the Northern Territory's Finniss River. He was caught in 1984.
Three years later, in 1987, Cassius was brought to Green Island. A crocodile hunter named George Craig, who had opened Marineland Melanesia in 1969, brought him there. When Cassius first arrived at the zoo, he measured 5.30 m (17 ft 5 in) long.
