The Ozark chinkapin (Castanea ozarkensis) is a special type of tree found in the United States. It belongs to the same family as chestnut trees. You might also hear it called "chinquapin."

What is the Ozark Chinkapin?

This tree is part of the Castanea group. This group includes well-known chestnuts and other trees called chinkapins. Some scientists think the Ozark chinkapin is a type of Allegheny chinkapin. They might call it C. pumila ozarkensis.

Where Does the Ozark Chinkapin Grow?

You can find the Ozark chinkapin mainly in the Ozark Mountains. It also grows in the Ouachita Mountains. These mountains are located in Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

A Source of Food

The Ozark chinkapin tree produces tasty nuts. For a long time, these nuts have been an important food source. Native American people and early settlers ate them. Many animals also rely on these nuts for food. This includes squirrels, chipmunks, deer, turkeys, and bobwhite birds.

Fighting a Tree Disease

The Ozark chinkapin has faced a big challenge: chestnut blight. This is a serious disease that hurts chestnut trees. The blight has badly damaged Ozark chinkapin trees. Because of it, many now grow only as small trees or shrubs.

Surviving the Blight

Even with the blight, some adult Ozark chinkapin trees have survived. Since the early 2000s, more than 45 of these strong trees have been found. Finding these survivors has started an exciting project.

Restoring the Ozark Chinkapin

The Ozark Chinkapin Foundation is leading a project to bring the species back. They are using seeds from the surviving trees. This helps create new trees that might also be strong against the blight.

Amazing Discoveries

Scientists have studied the Ozark chinkapin. They found that these trees have a lot of different genes. This is called genetic diversity. It means they might be better at fighting diseases. The American chestnut, which also suffered from the blight, has less genetic diversity.

An Ancient Tree

One study even suggests something surprising. The Ozark chinkapin might be older than the American chestnut and Allegheny chinkapin. It could be their ancestor, meaning it came first.

Stronger Than Expected

Another study found that surviving Ozark chinkapins are very resistant to the blight. They are even more resistant than the Chinese chestnut. Chinese chestnuts are known for not being affected by the blight. This gives hope for the Ozark chinkapin's future.

Notable Trees

A very large Ozark chinkapin tree grows in Barry County, Missouri. It has been named a "Champion Tree." This title is given to the biggest known trees of their kind.
