Castellar de la Frontera is a unique town in Spain. It's found in the province of Cádiz, which is in the Andalusia region. What makes Castellar special is that it's a medieval town built right inside a real castle!
About Castellar de la Frontera
Castellar de la Frontera is a small village located inside an old castle. The castle walls are very well kept. This fortress shows a mix of Moorish and Christian history.
The town is part of the Parque Natural de Los Alcornocales. This is a large natural park. It sits next to a reservoir, which is a lake made by the Guadarranque River.
A Town's Journey
In the 1970s, the people living in the old castle village moved out. They went to a new town nearby called Nuevo Castellar, which means "New Castellar." The old castle village became empty.
Later, some people from Germany started to live in the empty houses. They even built temporary homes outside the castle walls. Over time, the village inside the castle was repopulated. In 2012, about 3,202 people lived in the whole municipality.
Amazing Views
From Castellar, on a clear day, you can see far away! You might spot the coast of North Africa. You can also see Gibraltar and other villages in the mountains near Málaga to the north.
Getting There
Castellar is a bit isolated, meaning it's not easy to reach. It's at the end of a mountain road. This road branches off from the main A-368 highway. It's about 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Castellar to the larger N-340 road. It's also about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) to places like Gibraltar or Algeciras.
