History of the Fort
The Castillo de San Julián is named after the hill it sits on, called Monte de San Julián.
Early Building and Wars
In 1706, during the War of the Spanish Succession, the British took control of Cartagena. They built a round tower on the hill. After the war ended, Spain started building a larger fort around this tower. Their goal was to protect the entrance to Cartagena's harbor. Building the fort took a very long time. It was finally finished in 1883.
Later Use and Today
The fort was used as a military prison during the Spanish Civil War.
Today, the fort is still mostly complete, but it is in a worn-out condition. It is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural, which means it's an important cultural site in Spain. The fort is currently owned by Telefónica, a phone company, which has put up some antennas inside it. The city of Cartagena is trying to buy the fort and fix it up.
How the Fort Was Built
The Castillo de San Julián is mainly a bastioned fort. This means it has strong, pointed sections that stick out, allowing defenders to shoot in different directions. It also has features like tenaillles and caponiers. These are parts that help protect the fort's walls and ditches. The fort was built in the neoclassical architecture style. This style uses ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings.
