For a long time, the main jobs in this area involved forests. People used trees to make "naval stores." These were products like tar and pitch, which were important for building and maintaining wooden ships. Lumber was also a big part of the economy.
During the American Revolutionary War, the British army had a base nearby. After a tough battle, they left North Carolina. This led them to attack Yorktown, which was the final major battle of the war.
