The Castillo de Alcañices is an old castle found in a town called Alcañices, in the Zamora area of Spain. It was one of just four strong fortresses built north of the Duero River long ago. This castle played an important role in protecting the land.

History of Alcañices Castle

This castle has a long and interesting history. It was built a very long time ago, around the year 1211. Castles like this were super important for defending towns and controlling land in the past.

The Templar Knights and the Castle

For many years, the Castillo de Alcañices belonged to a famous group called the Templar Order. The Templars were a special group of knights. They were known for being very brave and skilled fighters. They also built many strong castles across Europe.

In 1210, the castle became part of the Templar Order's lands. A year later, in 1211, Alfonso IX of León, who was the king of the Kingdom of León at that time, officially gave the castle to the Templars. This was a big deal because it showed how much the king trusted them.

The Templars used the castle as a base. It was a place where they celebrated their victories and planned their next moves. They were a powerful force in the region.

What Happened to the Templars?

The Templar Order eventually faced many challenges. In the early 1300s, the order was dissolved, meaning it was officially ended. After this, the Castillo de Alcañices no longer belonged to the Templars.

The Castle Today

Sadly, the Castillo de Alcañices is not a complete castle anymore. Today, only ruins are left. You can still see parts of the old walls and structures. These ruins remind us of the castle's long history and the important role it once played in Spain.

Even though it's in ruins, the castle remains a significant historical site. It tells a story of knights, kings, and the changing times in medieval Spain.
