The Castle of Banyeres is an ancient fortress located in Banyeres de Mariola, in the Alicante area of the Valencian Community, Spain. It was built in the 13th century by the Almohads, a group of people who ruled parts of Spain long ago.
This castle stands proudly on a hill called tossal de l'Àguila, which means 'Hill of the Eagle' in English. It's right in the middle of Banyeres and sits about 830 meters (2,723 feet) above sea level.
About the Castle
The Castle of Banyeres has an interesting, uneven shape. It has two main sections and fits perfectly with the natural shape of the hill it's built on.
The Tower
The most important part of the castle is its tall tower. This tower is 17 meters (about 56 feet) high. It has a square base and three levels. The tower was built using a special technique called rammed earth. This means layers of damp earth were packed tightly together to form strong walls.
Walls and Other Features
The castle also has strong walls, which were also made from rammed earth. Some parts of the walls were repaired later with new stones. You can see arches with special wedge-shaped stones called voussoirs in these newer sections.
Inside the castle grounds, there's a water storage area called a cistern. There is also a small chapel, which is a place for worship.
Current Use
Today, the Castle of Banyeres is home to the Banyeres festive museum, known as (Museu Fester). This museum celebrates the local festivals and traditions of Banyeres.
