The Castle of Rajadell (in Spanish: Castillo de Rajadell) is a really old castle in Rajadell, Spain. It was built way back in the 900s! This castle was important during many big events in Spanish history. Today, it's officially recognized as a special Spanish heritage site.
About the Castle of Rajadell
This amazing castle was built in the Middle Ages, a long time ago, in what was then the Kingdom of Aragon. People first wrote about the castle in 961 A.D. Some other old papers say it was first mentioned in 1063.
The noble Rajadell family first built the castle. They built it during the early years of the Reconquista, a long period when Christian kingdoms took back land from Muslim rule in Spain. The castle stayed with the Rajadell family for hundreds of years.
The Castle's History
The castle was badly damaged during a big fight called the Catalan Civil War. The Rajadell family joined a group that rebelled against the king, John II of Aragon. Their side did not win, and the castle suffered a lot of damage.
After this, the family sold the castle in the 1500s. Over the next few centuries, different noble families owned the castle for a while. By the 1800s, it was still owned by private families.
Rajadell Castle in Modern Times
During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), the castle was used by revolutionaries from Catalonia as a base. This was a time of great change and conflict in Spain.
In 1988, the Spanish government officially declared the castle a heritage site. This means it is a very important historical place that needs to be protected. It is now listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural, which translates to a "Property of Cultural Interest."
