History of Castlewood
How Castlewood Got Its Name
The area was first called Castle's Woods. This name came from a frontiersman named Jacob Castle. A frontiersman was someone who explored and lived on the edge of settled lands. Jacob Castle owned the land in this area.
He bought the land from the Shawnee Indians for a very small trade. It's said he traded just a "hound dog, a knife, and a shot of whiskey." Jacob Castle was also a "Long Hunter." This meant he spent a lot of time hunting in the wilderness.
Jacob Castle and Daniel Boone
While hunting, Jacob Castle became friends with the Native Americans living there. He married a Shawnee woman named Gliding Swan. They had many children together.
Some people say that Jacob Castle showed the famous explorer Daniel Boone the Cumberland Gap. This path led Boone to explore and settle new lands to the west. Many of Jacob Castle's family members still live in Russell County today. His father, Peter Cassell, came from Germany to Pennsylvania.
Name Change and Historic Places
Later, in the late 1800s, the United States Postal Service changed the name to Castlewood. They did this to make the name simpler to spell and say. This was a common practice at the time.
Today, two important places in Castlewood are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Castlerun Historic District and the Mason-Dorton School. They are important because they show the history of the area.
