History of Catalina

Much of Catalina's history is connected to a large piece of land called the Golder Ranch.

The Golder Ranch Story

In 1956, a man named Lloyd Golder III and his family moved to Tucson, Arizona. The next year, they bought a big ranch called Rancho Vistoso, which was about 4,800 acres. That's like buying over 3,600 football fields!

In 1959, Golder bought an even bigger ranch nearby, called the Rail N. Ranch. This ranch was huge, about 18,000 acres. Parts of this land are now Catalina State Park and Biosphere 2.

Building and Developing Land

Between 1961 and 1964, Lloyd Golder built the Golder Dam. He hoped to create a lakeside community called Lago del Oro. However, after many years, the dam was found to be unsafe, and the community was never built. Today, a road called Lago Del Oro Parkway is a reminder of this plan.

Later, Golder developed other areas on his land. These included the Twin Lakes subdivision and the Rail N. Ranch subdivision. A subdivision is a large area of land that has been divided into smaller lots for homes to be built. He also named many of the streets in these areas.

The Golder Ranch Fire District

Around 1976, Chief H.D. "Bob" and Della Murray started the Golder Ranch Fire District. This is the local fire department that helps keep the community safe. Lloyd Golder and his brother-in-law, Jim McLaughlin, donated the land for the fire department's main building. The fire department was named after the Golder Ranch. Lloyd Golder's wife, Vicki Cox Golder, has also served on the fire district's board for many years.

Lloyd Golder III passed away in 2013. The land known as Golder Ranch is still legally called the Rail N. Ranch. It continues to be an active ranch today.

Government Representation

Catalina is part of Arizona's 6th Congressional District. This district is represented by Juan Ciscomani, who is a Republican. A Congressional District is an area that elects one person to represent them in the United States Congress.

The community is also in Arizona's 11th State Legislative District. This district has representatives in the state government. The representatives for this district are Mark Finchem and Vince Leach in the Arizona House of Representatives. The senator for this district is Steve Smith. All of these representatives are also Republicans.
