Cateel is a town in the province of Davao Oriental, Philippines. It is also known as the Municipality of Cateel. In 2020, about 44,207 people lived there.
Cateel is famous for the amazing Aliwagwag Falls. These waterfalls are located in the Aliwagwag Protected Landscape. Many people consider them the highest and most beautiful falls in the Philippines. The falls look like a giant stairway to heaven. They have 84 different steps, with heights from 2 meters to 33.5 meters. The entire Aliwagwag Falls system is about 340 meters tall and 20 meters wide. A river flows at the bottom, with 13 rapids to cross. All of this is surrounded by a beautiful, untouched forest.

History of Cateel
Cateel holds a special place in history. It was the first town in Mindanao where Spanish explorers landed. Because of this, many of its first residents became Catholic.
In 1959, two areas called Mainit and Alegria became official villages, known as barangays.
Cateel faced a big challenge in December 2012. A very strong storm called Typhoon Bopha hit the town hard. It caused a lot of damage to homes and the area.
