The Cathedral of St. Joseph is an important church in Manchester, New Hampshire, United States. It is the main church for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manchester. You can find it at 145 Lowell Street in the city's downtown area. The current Bishop of the Diocese is Bishop Peter Libasci. Monsignor Anthony Frontiero is the leader of the church parish.
History of the Cathedral
This church was started in 1869. It was built to help the many Irish people who had moved to the area.
Becoming a Cathedral
In 1884, Pope Leo XIII created the Diocese of Manchester. This meant Manchester would have its own special church leader, called a bishop. St. Joseph's church became the main church for this new diocese in 1894. A main church for a diocese is called a cathedral.
Changes Over Time
The building has been updated and made larger several times. In 1968, some parts of the church were changed. For example, the main altar and many decorations were removed. This was done to follow new ideas popular at the time.
Later, in 2014, the diocese started another project. They wanted to bring back some of the older style. They installed similar pieces that came from another church in Boston that had closed.
