History of the Cathedral
Greek Orthodox people first came to Spain in the late 1800s. Many of them were Greek merchants who moved to the Iberian Peninsula.
Founding the Parish
In 1949, a church community called the Parish of St Andrew the Apostle (Parroquia del Apóstol San Andrés) was started in Madrid. This community was part of the Patriarch of Constantinople's area.
Building the Cathedral
The first stone for the current cathedral was placed in 1971. Construction finished quickly in 1973, and the church opened that same year. It is built in the Byzantine style, which is an old and beautiful way of building. It also has a tall bell tower.
Inside the Church
Inside, like other Eastern Orthodox churches, you will find an iconostasis. This is a special screen covered with icons (religious paintings). It has holy doors that separate the main part of the church, called the nave, from the sanctuary. The walls inside are completely covered with colorful fresco paintings. These beautiful designs were made by Greek artists.
