Life and Career Highlights
Catherine Breillat was born in Bressuire, France, but grew up in a town called Niort. When she was just twelve years old, she decided she wanted to be a writer and director. She started her career after studying acting in Paris in 1967. Her sister, Marie-Hélène Breillat, is also an actress. Catherine published her first novel, A Man for the Asking, when she was only 17. A movie based on this book was made soon after.
Breillat is known for making films that explore relationships and family dynamics. Her novels have been very popular.
Even though she mostly works behind the camera, Catherine has also acted in a few movies. She first appeared in a film called Last Tango in Paris in 1972, alongside her sister.
In 2004, Catherine Breillat had a stroke, which affected her left side. After spending five months in the hospital and working hard to recover, she slowly returned to making films. In 2007, she directed The Last Mistress. This movie was chosen to be shown at the famous Cannes Film Festival that year.
In 2010, her second fairy-tale inspired film, Sleeping Beauty, was shown at the Venice Film Festival. Catherine Breillat continues to work on new projects and films.
