The Caucau River is a small but important river in the city of Valdivia, located in southern Chile. It plays a special role in the local geography. The Caucau River helps connect other rivers and forms a unique island right in front of the city center.
About the Caucau River
The Caucau River acts like a helpful connection between two bigger rivers: the Cruces River and the Calle-Calle River. Think of it as a channel that helps manage the water flow between them. This special connection creates an island called Isla Teja. This island sits right across from the main part of Valdivia city.
Where the Rivers Meet
When the Caucau River joins with the Calle-Calle River, it marks the beginning of an even larger waterway, the Valdivia River. So, the Caucau River is a key piece in the puzzle of Valdivia's many rivers.
The Big Earthquake of 1960
In 1960, a very powerful earthquake hit Valdivia. It was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded! This earthquake caused the ground to sink in some areas. This sinking, called subsidence, led to a permanent flooding of parts of the botanical garden at the Austral University of Chile. This garden was right next to the Caucau River. Because of the earthquake, some areas of the garden are now always covered in water.
