Cavan is a suburb located just north of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. It's part of the City of Salisbury local government area, which means it's managed by the local council there. Cavan is a quiet area with a history that goes back to the early days of settlement in South Australia.

History

The land where Cavan now stands, along with nearby areas like Mawson Lakes and Pooraka, was once known as Dry Creek. The name "Cavan" itself likely came from Cavan in County Cavan, Republic of Ireland. This suggests that early settlers from Ireland played a big part in naming the area.

One story says that Daniel Brady, an Irish immigrant, bought land here and opened the Cross Keys Hotel in 1849. Another person, B. Gillick, might have also named the area after his home county. A newspaper, The Advertiser, reported in 2013 that the suburb got its name from a local hotel called "The Cavan Arms." This hotel was licensed in 1855 by R.B. Colley, who was also born in County Cavan, Ireland. So, it seems the Irish connection is very strong!

Over the years, Cavan had its own railway station. The Northfield railway line opened a station in Cavan in 1914. This allowed people to travel easily to and from the area. However, the station stopped carrying passengers on July 24, 1987. Cavan also had its own Post Office, which opened on March 2, 1959, but it closed down in 1974. These changes show how the suburb has grown and changed over time.
