The Cavan County Museum (which is Músaem Chontae an Chabháin in Irish) is a cool place to learn all about the history of County Cavan in Ireland. It's located in an old building that used to be a convent for nuns, in a town called Ballyjamesduff.

History of the Museum

The museum first opened its doors in 1996. It is set inside a beautiful building from the 1800s that was once a convent for the Poor Clares nuns. The main goal of the museum is to gather, protect, and show off all the amazing historical items and culture from County Cavan. They cover a huge amount of time, going back over 6,000 years!

What You Can See at the Museum

The old convent building holds all the exciting exhibits and also has lovely gardens to explore. The museum's collections include items from very old times (prehistoric) right up to modern days.

Special Exhibits and Items

  • Ancient Stones: You can see the Killycluggin Stone, which is a very old and mysterious stone. There's also the Lavey Sheela na gig, which is a unique stone carving.
  • Everyday Life: The museum has a collection of old costumes in something called the Pighouse Collection.
  • Sports History: If you like sports, you'll find items related to the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), which is very popular in Ireland.
  • Important Events: There are exhibits about the Great Famine in County Cavan, which was a very difficult time in Irish history.
  • Local Heroes: You can also learn about famous local people, like the well-known singer Percy French.
  • The Convent's Story: Since the museum is in an old convent, there's a special exhibit all about the Poor Clares nuns who lived there.
  • Historical Objects: A more recent addition to the museum's displays is the personal revolver of Arthur Griffith, who was an important politician from the area.

Interactive Displays

One of the most interesting parts of the museum is a replica of a World War I trench. This trench was built exactly like the ones used by soldiers, including the Royal Irish Fusiliers. It helps visitors understand what life was like for soldiers during that time.

The museum also works with other museums, like the Fermanagh County Museum, on projects to connect people with their local history. There's a special gallery that often shows art from local and national artists. The museum is also officially allowed by the National Museum of Ireland to collect important archaeological finds.
