Discovering Cave Alumroot
This plant is known for living in very shady places. You can often find it under big rock overhangs or cliffs. It almost never gets direct sunlight. In these dark spots, it's sometimes the only plant growing! Cave alumroot is not very common across the areas where it grows. It blooms with flowers in the late summer and through the fall season.
Where Does Cave Alumroot Live?
Cave alumroot grows naturally in the eastern United States. It's mostly found in areas like the Ozark Mountains, the Appalachian Mountains, and the Cumberland Plateau. It loves places where it's deeply shaded, like under rocky ledges.
Different Kinds of Cave Alumroot
Scientists have found two main types, or "varieties," of Heuchera parviflora. Sometimes, these varieties are even thought of as separate species. They are:
- H. parviflora var. parviflora: This type grows in the Appalachian Mountains and the Interior Low Plateaus.
- H. parviflora var. puberula: This type is found in the Ozark Mountains.
How is it Different from Other Plants?
It's important not to confuse Heuchera parviflora with another plant called Heuchera parvifolia. Even though their names sound similar, Heuchera parvifolia grows in the western part of the United States, while Heuchera parviflora is found in the eastern part. They are different species.
