Who Was Cayetano Redondo?
Cayetano Redondo was born on August 7, 1888, in a city called Segovia in Spain. When he was young, his family moved to Madrid, the capital city. He started working as a typographer, which means he helped arrange text for printing.
In 1905, he joined a big workers' union called the Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT). This union helped workers get fair treatment and better conditions.
Early Political Life
By 1918, Cayetano Redondo became a leader of the National Federation of Juventudes Socialistas. This was the youth group of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). He also wrote for several political newspapers, including one called El Socialista.
In 1931, he was elected as a city council member for Madrid. He represented the Chamberí area. He was in charge of Social Work for the city government. He also looked after the University district. Later that year, he was elected to the Constituent Cortes. This was like a parliament for the Second Spanish Republic. He represented the province of Segovia.
An Esperanto Speaker
Cayetano Redondo was also well-known for being an esperantist. Esperanto is an international language created to help people from different countries communicate easily. In 1927, he represented Spain at a special summer school for Esperanto speakers in Austria. He also gave the opening speech at the 9th Spanish Congress of Esperanto in 1932.
Mayor During the Spanish Civil War
The Spanish Civil War began in 1936. Madrid was under attack from the forces of General Franco. The city's mayor at the time, Pedro Rico, left Madrid.
On November 8, 1936, Cayetano Redondo was chosen to be the new Mayor of Madrid. This was a very difficult time for the city. Many decisions for the city were made by the Defence Council of Madrid. Cayetano Redondo served as mayor until April 1937. After him, Rafael Henche became the mayor.
His Final Years
After Madrid was taken over by Franco's forces, Cayetano Redondo was captured. He passed away on May 21, 1940. He was buried in a mass grave at the Cementerio de la Almudena. Later, his remains were moved. They were buried with José Gómez Osorio, who was another important Republican official. His grave is close to the memorial for "The Thirteen Roses."
