Ayn (also spelled Cayn) is a region located in northern Somalia. It is centered around the city of Buuhoodle. The name "Ayn" comes from the Somali word Cayn and the Arabic word عين.

What is Ayn?

Ayn is a part of Somalia that has seen many changes in how it is governed. It is known for its local leadership and the groups that protect its people.

History of Ayn's Administration

Ayn was first set up as a province by Puntland in 2009. A province is like a large area or state within a country. At that time, Ayn was one of Puntland's seven regions.

However, things changed in 2012. Ayn was then taken over by Khatumo State. Khatumo State was trying to become a new federal state for the reer darawiish people. A federal state is a region that has its own government but is still part of a larger country.

Ayn Today

As of the 2020s, Ayn is run by its own local leaders. These leaders are from the reer darawiish community. They work with local groups, sometimes called militias, to manage the area. This means Ayn acts like an independent area, making its own decisions.
