Khatumo or Khatumo State is a region in Somalia. It is located in the eastern part of the Horn of Africa. Khatumo is a place that acts like a state but is not fully recognized by other countries.
It shares borders with Somaliland to the west. To the south, it borders Ethiopia. To the east, it borders Puntland, another region in Somalia.

What is Khatumo?
Khatumo is a self-governing region within Somalia. It was created by local leaders in 2012. The name Khatumo means positive agreement. This name was chosen because different clan leaders agreed to form this state.
Where is Khatumo Located?
Khatumo is found in the northern part of Somalia. It is in an area known as the Horn of Africa. This region is a large peninsula that sticks out into the Arabian Sea.
A Brief History of Khatumo
Before 2012, the government of this area had different names. In 1991, when Somalia's main government fell apart, this region was called NSUM. NSUM stood for the National Somali Unionist Movement.
Later, for about ten years, it was known as Northland State. The areas claimed by the Khatumo government today were once part of Northland State. The current name, Khatumo, was chosen in 2012. This happened after local leaders from the Dhulbahante clan agreed to create the state.
People and Culture
Most people living in Khatumo belong to the Dhulbahante clan. A clan is a group of families who share a common ancestor. Most Khatumites speak the Somali language.
English and Arabic are also spoken in the region. These languages are taught in schools. The local news and media in Khatumo use Standard Somali. Most people in Khatumo are Muslim. Other members of the Harti clan also live in this area.
