In 2005, only 11 people lived on Cayo Gorda. The island is very small, covering an area of about 0.007 square kilometers. That's roughly the size of a few soccer fields!
Why Cayo Gorda is Important
Even though Cayo Gorda is tiny and has few people, it plays a role in international agreements.
Setting Ocean Borders
In 2001, Cayo Gorda was used as a key spot in a special agreement. This agreement was a treaty between Honduras and the Cayman Islands. A treaty is like a formal written agreement between countries.
Defining Maritime Boundaries
The treaty helped to set the maritime boundary between these two areas. A maritime boundary is an imaginary line in the ocean. It shows where one country's control over the sea ends and another's begins. These boundaries are important for things like fishing rights and shipping routes. Cayo Gorda's location made it a useful point to help draw this line in the Caribbean Sea.
